Impact Architects is launching something new. This winter, we’re opening applications for IA Blueprints, a new series of structured, practical learning programs designed to help newsrooms build or strengthen their impact measurement practice.

Blueprints grew out of years spent inside newsrooms, studying media systems, working within philanthropy, and partnering with hundreds of teams. Across all those vantage points, the same barriers keep surfacing: impact matters to newsrooms, but there’s rarely enough time, shared language, or dedicated structure to build a practice that lasts. Teams want to measure what’s working, but the work gets pushed by the day-to-day. They want support, but not a heavy lift. They want community, but don’t always know where to find it.

Blueprints is our attempt to help fill that gap, by offering focused programs that are both accessible and grounded in real newsroom realities.

Why we’re launching this program:

In conversations across the field, the needs are clear:

  • Teams lack a shared starting point. Even motivated newsrooms often have different internal uses for impact tracking for things like grant reporting or audience engagement, meaning definitions of “success” can vary from team to team.

  • Impact work gets deprioritized–not for lack of interest, but for lack of structure. Without workflows, dedicated time, or a model to follow, the work tends to slip to the bottom of the list.

  • Many want guidance that isn’t tied to months of consulting. They need something short, structured, and affordable–and want to learn alongside peers facing similar questions.

Blueprints is designed with this in mind. It creates a space to experiments with approaches we know work: defining outcomes, gathering qualitative data, designing workflows, and grounding decisions in evidence. And because no two newsrooms are alike, we’re intentionally keeping the first cohort small — just 3–5 organizations — so we can tailor the experience, learn directly from participants, and refine the format before rolling out additional offerings.

This is the beginning of a larger suite of programs. Future Blueprints courses will focus on topics like impact reporting, ecosystem assessments, or audience research methods–all aimed at helping newsrooms build the core components of a healthy impact practice.

For our team at Impact Architects, this is also a way to make what we’ve learned more accessible. We want more newsrooms to benefit from shared methods, clearer language, and practical tools.

What the first course covers:

Our first offering is Media Impact Measurement 101, a six-week virtual program beginning the first week of February 2026. It’s designed for newsroom teams who want a clear, usable introduction to impact measurement and a pathway to putting it into practice.

Each newsroom may involve up to three staff members, ensuring that editorial, audience, development, or leadership perspectives can move through the process together.

Participants will receive:

  • Four 90-minute group learning sessions

  • Two 90-minute one-on-one sessions with Impact Architects

  • A customized impact framework tailored to their newsroom

  • A 20-question bank for audience surveys, community sessions, etc.

  • The IA Impact Tracker, plus a newsroom-specific how-to guide

  • Access to all course materials, including templates and worksheets
